Ranga Shankara
Dedicated Bengaluru theatre venue in JP Nagar with “a play a day” programming and festivals for all ages
About This Community
Ranga Shankara is a non-profit theatre space in JP Nagar, Bengaluru, established in 2004 and run by The Sanket Trust.
It exists to make high-quality theatre accessible and affordable, offering a world-class auditorium to theatre troupes at low rental while promoting productions in multiple languages, especially Kannada.
The venue focuses solely on theatre, with a mission to showcase plays from India and abroad, commission new work, and build audiences through outreach and festivals (including work for children).
One of the most energetic and dynamic theatre practitioners of his generation, Shankar began his theatre journey at the age of 16. While much of his reputation was built as an actor in films and as a director for television (Malgudi Days remains a landmark production on Indian TV) and movies, Shankar held theatre close to his heart and never really moved too far from the stage.
What We Do
- Regular public plays in multiple languages (Kannada, English, Hindi, and others), following an “at least a play a day” policy six days a week (typically dark on Mondays)
- Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival – a week-long, theme-based annual festival featuring Indian and international plays, plus seminars, discussions, and workshops; more than 250 shows and 50,000+ audience members over 15 editions
- AHA! Theatre for Children – a flagship programme and international children’s theatre festival that has brought roughly 175,000 children to the theatre, with productions from India and abroad every July
- Workshops, seminars and outreach programmes that impart theatre skills and build audiences (training, labs, and engagement for students and practitioners)
- Occasional collaborations, readings, and related cultural events in secondary spaces at and around the venue
