About This Event
Nangeli is a socially driven historical drama inspired by the story of a woman from early 19th century Kerala who defied the oppressive breast tax known as Mulakkaram imposed on marginalised women.
Set against a rigid caste based society, the play portrays her tragic yet heroic resistance against injustice and her fight for dignity, bodily autonomy and freedom.
Through the traditional art form of Kathakali, the play depicts Dushyasana within men, symbolising the forces that seek to strip women of their dignity. The traditional ritual art of Padayani brings Nangeli and Chirukandan together in a story of love, while their ultimate act of defiance becomes a powerful symbol of courage, sacrifice and resistance.
Nangeli received the Second Place Silver Medal among 24 universities at the All India Universities National Youth Festival 2026 held in Chennai.
Rooted in Kerala`s cultural heritage, Nangeli explores oppression, social awakening and the enduring struggle for human dignity and equality.
